The Problem: Finding Short-Term Housing Shouldn’t Be This Hard

Medical professionals on short-term assignments need temporary housing that is affordable, comfortable, and safe. However, The Room MD’s existing web platform lacked key features that would allow users to:

  • Communicate with landlords directly through the platform.

  • Leave property reviews after their stay.

  • Express interest in a listing before booking.

  • Track past rental properties for future reference.

These missing functionalities limited user engagement and made it harder for medical professionals to decide where to stay. We aimed to enhance the platform by making it more interactive, seamless, and user-friendly.

01. Understanding the Needs of Traveling Medical Professionals 🩺

Aligning with Business Goals šŸŽÆ

We started the project by reviewing the client’s questionnaire responses and their ultimate objectives. The key goals identified were:

Learning from the Best šŸ

To gain insights into best practices, I conducted a competitive analysis of platforms like Airbnb, Zillow, and Rent.com.

  1. Airbnb’s logged-in vs. logged-out experience showed us how to structure the dashboard for seamless user navigation.

  2. Dropdown menus for profiles made navigation cleaner and more intuitive.

  3. Property rating and messaging features were essential for user trust both of which The Room MD lacked.

02. Structuring a Seamless Housing Experience

With our research in place, we outlined core improvements to guide the design process:

By defining these priorities early, we ensured that our design decisions directly addressed user frustrations and enhanced the platform’s usability.

03. Mapping Out the User Journey šŸ›¤

To ensure a smooth, logical experience, we structured user flows based on the most critical tasks medical professionals needed to complete.

Structuring the Dashboard for Maximum Efficiency

After finalizing user flows, we began wireframing the core screens:

04. Ensuring a Smooth Transition šŸ›

Here is how the final prototype looks like with the style guide implemented.

To avoid miscommunication, we provided developers with:

Fully Annotated Screens – Detailed functionality breakdowns for every interaction.
Precise Measurements & Spacing – Ensuring pixel-perfect implementation.
User Flow Diagrams – Helping developers understand navigation & interactions clearly.

Unexpected Handoff Issue & Resolution 🚧

During the handoff, I noticed only the screen elements were transferring, not the measurements. We realized we had used the wrong plugin, requiring an extra four hours of work to correct the issue. Lesson learned: Always double-check the tools before starting the handoff!

Reflections: Key Takeaways & Lessons Learned šŸ¤”

Leading this project was both challenging and rewarding. Some major takeaways:

  • Collaboration is Key – A dedicated team made implementation smoother & more efficient.
Client Communication Matters – Delayed feedback slowed progress, but proactive updates kept us on track.
Attention to Detail Makes the Difference – Small refinements, like profile dropdowns and review layouts, greatly improved usability.

If I could continue iterating, I’d love to explore:

  • Usability testing to refine the design based on real user feedback.

  • Profile & user settings page for a more customized experience.

Ultimately, our work transformed The Room MD into a more interactive, user-friendly platform, making housing searches easier for medical professionals. šŸš€
